Will Pregnancy Affect a Breast Augmentation Surgery Procedure?

Some people inquire as to whether a breast augmentation procedure will affect their chances of getting pregnant. Unfortunately no real studies into this concept have been done and therefore there is no accurate information regarding the two. The good thing is that many women although having reported some minor tissue loss in their breasts have not in fact reported any complication in getting pregnant after undergoing a breast augmentation procedure.

In the cases where minor breast tissue loss is reported the outcome is generally a slight sagging of the breasts but this in now days will affect one’s ability to become pregnant. On the other side a woman who has been pregnant in the past and has decided to undergo a breast augmentation can improve their breasts appearance.

The biggest issues associated with the breast augmentation procedure and a pregnancy is not about the pregnancy itself but rather about the breastfeeding of the infant after birth. In general, most incision types will in no way affect a mother’s ability to breastfeed her child. However, in the event that the breast augmentation is performed via an areola incision there is an increased chance of damaging the mammary ducts that run between the mammary glands and the nipple. Due to the location and the type of procedure it is possible for even a well-seasoned plastic surgeon to put a little too much pressure in the mammary gland which results in damage to the mammary ducts, This damage in turn prevents the flow of breast milk from the mammary glands to the nipple and therefore may prevent the child from getting the appropriate amount of milk needed.

Sometimes depending on the patient it is still possible for these ducts to get damaged from the other forms of incisions but these cases are very rare. When one thinks of the mammary ducts, you have to envision a fiber optic cable with thousands of strands in which the medium flows through. This is similar to the mammary ducts and in the event that even one is damaged it may not allow breast milk to flow through it.

Remember to speak with your surgeon prior to the procedure about this if you plan on having any children in the future or even if you may think that becoming pregnant may be an option as this information will help you and the doctor make a good decision about your breast augmentation options.
